Jailer – Asa (#ThrowBackThursday) ——- Today’s throwback brings you one of the A Class Artist in the Nigerian Music Industry. Asa (pronounced “Asha”; born 1 September 1982) is a Nigerian French singer-songwriter, and recording artist. Her stage name “Asa” means “Hawk” in Yoruba.
Born Bukola Elemide, Asa was born in Paris, France to her Nigerian parents. Her family returned to live in Nigeria when she was two. Asa grew up in Alagbole, a border town in Ogun state near Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria. Whenever Asa came home from school in Nigeria, she discovered musical acts like Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Lauryn Hill, Femi Kuti and Angélique Kidjo. Jailer – Asa (#ThrowBackThursday)
Asa fuses pop, r&b, world, funk, soul and reggae where she sings in both English and Yoruba.
“Jailer” was released in 2009 on her “Live in Paris” album/CD. The song is about « the irony of oppression, the one that operates in everyday life.
Asa’s album met recognition worldwide and the artist engaged in an extended tour including Europe, North America, Africa and Japan. Asa gained global recognition as a charismatic songstress with a trademark husky voice, unafraid to tackle serious issues with intelligence and confidence. « This Nigerian singer-songwriter might actually be a twenty-first century Bob Marley.
